If your springtime allergies have been acting up recently, there's a likely explanation: sex. As the days grow longer and subtropical moisture blows in from Mexican shores, desert broom and triangle-leaf bursage frantically scatter their sperm cells to the wind in the hopes of fertilizing a lucky ovum. Mammals and insects alike prepare for a similar scramble for reproduction, the frantic race for perpetuating one's genetic code in the population.

In almost all other regards to sex, humans are no different; however, our approach to reproduction is uncommon in the animal kingdom. We fall into a narrow category of animals (including dolphins and bonobos) for whom sex has evolved into a social experience, not simply one of begetting offspring. Furthermore, we are unique in that we use tools and methods to regulate our reproductive behavior and protect ourselves against infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact.

Arizona is one of 21 states that stresses abstinence-only education in its policies; it also has high STI infection rates and possesses one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the nation.  Because comprehensive sex education is inaccessible for many students and young adults, they often look to the internet for advice on controlling their sexual health. As it stands, there is no website specific to the Tucson / Pima County area that adequately addresses the family planning needs of local teenagers. Under the tutelage of programmers and artists from BRINK, an agency specializing in graphics design and advertising, I will construct a website on contraception that is accessible to young adults, aesthetically pleasing, and informative.
